Summer Camps

Life-Changing Youth Music Education

In the summer of 2018, we expanded our summer programming from one camp to three. Each focuses on a different musical area and all engage kids in an intense 5 days of music education that incorporates lessons in life skills delivered by Lakehouse Music Academy.

These camps are part of the Music Saved My Life youth music education initiative, which is a partnership between the Asbury Park Music Foundation and Lakehouse Music Academy.

Asbury Park Summer Music Camp

Each summer, young camp members from the Asbury Park Recreation program participate in full day, week-long band intensives at Lakehouse Music Academy. The campers choose songs that they want to learn and perform them at a concert at the end of the week. This camp is made possible through funding from the Irene A. Van Deusen Fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey. Ms. Van Deusen passed away in 2006 leaving a significant portion of her estate to the Community Foundation specifically to “assist in the development and encouragement of young artists and musicians and encourage individuals to volunteer in their communities.” We are grateful for her contribution.

Hip Hop Music Camp

This camp was introduced in 2018 as an extension of the ongoing Hip Hop Institute and runs year-round at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth (BGCM). The joint effort between APMF, BGCM and Lakehouse Academy is funded through a grant from The Jules L. Plangere Family Foundation with additional support from Makin Waves.

Latino Experience Music Camp

Another camp added in 2018 engaged the Latino community. Funding was provided by the Asbury Park LIVE event series, which is sponsored by MOGO Korean Tacos, Watermark, Pepsi, Ansell Grimm & Aaron, Stone Pony Summer Stage, OceanFirst Bank, Asbury Park Food Collective, Crepe Shop, Puckers and Asbury Park Distilling Co. The camp was so successful for the students participating in the week-long music lessons; that APMF is pursuing scholarships to continue their education year-round.
